What is the Gospel? Explaining the Good News of Jesus Christ

The gospel is the central message of Christianity, the good news that God has revealed to us in His Son, Jesus Christ. The word gospel means “good news” in Greek, and it summarizes the main points of God’s plan to save humanity from sin and death.

The gospel can be summarized in four main points:

  • God is the Creator and Ruler of all things. He is holy, righteous, and loving. He created us in His image, to have a relationship with Him and to reflect His glory. (Genesis 1:1, 26-27; Psalm 24:1; Isaiah 6:3; John 3:16)
  • We have rebelled against God and broken His laws. We have sinned, which means missing the mark of God’s perfect standard. We have fallen short of His glory, and we deserve His wrath and judgment. We are separated from God and dead in our sins. (Romans 3:23; 6:23; Ephesians 2:1-3; Colossians 1:21)
  • God sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to rescue us from our sins. Jesus is fully God and fully man, the only mediator between God and us. He lived a sinless life, died on the cross for our sins, and rose from the dead on the third day. He paid the penalty for our sins, satisfied God’s justice, and demonstrated God’s love. He is the Lord and Savior of all who believe in Him. (John 1:1, 14; 14:6; 1 Timothy 2:5; 2 Corinthians 5:21; 1 Peter 3:18; Romans 5:8; 10:9-10; 1 Corinthians 15:3-4)
  • We can be reconciled to God and receive eternal life by faith in Jesus Christ. Faith means trusting in Jesus alone as our Lord and Savior, repenting of our sins, and surrendering our lives to Him. When we do this, we are forgiven of our sins, adopted as God’s children, and filled with the Holy Spirit. We are saved by grace, not by works. We are called to follow Jesus, obey His commands, and share His gospel with others. (Ephesians 2:8-9; John 1:12; 3:16; Acts 2:38; 16:31; Romans 8:14-17; 12:1-2; Matthew 28:18-20)

Faith means trusting in Jesus alone as our Lord and Savior, repenting of our sins, and surrendering our lives to Him.

This is the gospel, the good news of Jesus Christ. It is the most important message in the world, and it is for everyone who hears it. If you have not yet received the gospel, we invite you to do so today. If you have already received the gospel, we encourage you to live it out and share it with others. The gospel is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes. (Romans 1:16)
